Tai Shan - first surviving giant panda cub born at the National Zoo

Tai Shan was born at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park on July 9, 2005 to pandas Mei Xiang and Tian Tian and was the first giant panda cub born at the National Zoo to survive to adulthood. His birth marked a major milestone in the zoo’s captive-breeding and conservation efforts and attracted widespread international media attention. Tai Shan later traveled to China in accordance with the zoo’s panda loan agreement, as mandated by international conservation and loan terms.
