First transcontinental telephone call reception site in San Francisco

On January 25, 1915, the first transcontinental telephone call was inaugurated between New York and San Francisco; the San Francisco endpoint for the public celebration and connection was at the St. Francis Hotel. The event marked the completion of a coast-to-coast telephone line capable of voice transmissions across the continent. AT&T engineers and company officials conducted the on-site ceremonies in New York and San Francisco to demonstrate the new long-distance service.
