Ohel Rachel Synagogue

The Ohel Rachel Synagogue, located in Shanghai's Jing'an District, is the largest synagogue in the Far East and a significant historical landmark. Built in memory of Sir Jacob Elias Sassoon's wife Rachel, it was completed in 1920 and features a neo-Baroque design. The synagogue has a rich history, having served various purposes during World War II and the Communist era, including being repurposed as a stable and later a warehouse. After years of neglect, it was restored in the late 1990s and reopened for Jewish holidays, with regular services resuming during the 2010 Shanghai Expo. Today, it stands as a testament to the Jewish community's resilience and cultural heritage in Shanghai.
