Sampur Stupa

The Sampur Stupa, located in the historic Soodaikudah archaeological site in Sampur, Sri Lanka, dates back to the early Anuradhapura period (377 BC to 1017 AD). Discovered in December 2017, the site revealed a dilapidated stupa amidst a Hindu shrine. Unfortunately, just days after its discovery, the stupa was destroyed by vandals using a bulldozer, prompting a police investigation and arrests. The site is now under the protection of the Department of Archaeology, highlighting the ongoing efforts to preserve Sri Lanka's rich cultural heritage, especially in areas previously affected by conflict.
