Elfreth's Alley (oldest continuously inhabited residential street)

Elfreth's Alley in Old City is commonly cited as the oldest continuously inhabited residential street in the United States, with surviving houses dating from the early 18th century and documented occupation beginning around 1702. The narrow cobblestone alley contains a concentrated collection of small 18th- and early-19th-century rowhouses that illustrate urban domestic architecture of the period. The Elfreth's Alley Museum at 124 Elfreth's Alley interprets the street’s architectural and social history through period rooms and exhibits. The alley is preserved and celebrated as an intact example of early American residential streetscape.
