Katherine Switzer's 1967 Boston Marathon entry and confrontation

In 1967 Kathrine Switzer registered for the Boston Marathon under the name K.V. Switzer and received bib number 261, becoming the first woman to run the race with an official bib. During the race an official, Jock Semple, attempted to physically remove her from the course near the finish; she was protected by other runners and completed the race. The incident drew national attention and is widely cited in accounts of women's participation in distance running. Women were not officially allowed an open division in the Boston Marathon until 1972.
