Jefferson Davis Hospital

Jefferson Davis Hospital, operational from 1924 to 1989, was Houston's first municipal hospital for indigent patients and is now a historic landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located in the Historic First Ward, the building features a striking Classical-revival architectural style, designed by Wilkes Alfred Dowdy. After its closure, the site was transformed into the Elder Street Artists Lofts, providing live/work spaces for artists. The property has a complex history, originally serving as a municipal cemetery for thousands, including Confederate soldiers, before its conversion to a hospital. The site is also noted for its haunted reputation, adding an intriguing layer for visitors and researchers alike.
