Battle of Alcatraz (May 2–4, 1946)

In May 1946 an armed escape attempt by inmates on Alcatraz Island escalated into a multi-day gun battle between prisoners and federal authorities that is popularly known as the "Battle of Alcatraz." The fighting involved U.S. Marshals, federal prison guards, and military personnel in suppressing the breakout. The incident ended with the island retaken by authorities and resulted in multiple deaths and injuries among inmates and staff. The event took place within the Alcatraz prison complex on Alcatraz Island.
