Marquam Building

The Marquam Building was an eight-story Romanesque Revival office building in Portland, Oregon, recognized as the city's first skyscraper and modern office structure. Opened in 1892, it was part of a larger development that included the Marquam Grand Opera House, which was highly praised in its time. Despite its initial architectural acclaim, the Marquam Building faced criticism for its gloomy design and suffered from structural issues, leading to its collapse during renovations in the early 20th century. The site was eventually replaced by the American Bank Building, marking a significant transition in Portland's architectural landscape.
