Golden Gate Bridge opening and design

The Golden Gate Bridge opened to vehicular traffic on May 28, 1937, after approximately four years of construction. Its main suspension span is 4,200 feet long, which made it the longest suspension bridge main span in the world at the time of completion. Architecturally notable features include its International Orange color, chosen by architect Irving Morrow, and Joseph Strauss served as chief engineer of the project.
