Government Cable Office

The Government Cable Office in Seward, Alaska, is a historic telegraph office built in 1905 by the U.S. Army Signal Corps. It was part of the Washington–Alaska Military Cable and Telegraph System, connecting Seward to the continental United States. The first message sent over the line marked a significant communication milestone for the region. The office served the public until 1934 when an earthquake disrupted service, leading to the rise of radio communication. The building, which has also functioned as a private residence and apartments, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, making it a notable site for tourists and researchers interested in Alaska's communication history.
