Rough Point

Rough Point is a stunning Gilded Age mansion located in Newport, Rhode Island, designed in English Manorial style by Peabody & Stearns for Frederick William Vanderbilt. Completed in 1892, this red sandstone and granite estate overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and is bordered by the scenic Cliff Walk. Originally owned by the Vanderbilts, it later became the cherished residence of Doris Duke, who filled it with priceless antiques and art. Today, Rough Point operates as a museum, showcasing its historical significance and offering tours from April to November, along with rotating exhibits of Duke's personal collections. Visitors can explore the beautifully preserved interiors and gardens, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted's firm, and learn about the mansion's intriguing history, including its connection to notable figures and events.
