Big Dig buried the elevated Central Artery and created the Rose Kennedy Greenway

The Central Artery/Tunnel Project (commonly the Big Dig) relocated the elevated I‑93 highway into the Thomas P. O'Neill Jr. Tunnel beneath downtown Boston, with major construction completed in 2007. The project removed the Interstate 93 elevated highway and replaced its former footprint with the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway, a linear series of parks and public spaces that altered the surface-level urban geography. The Big Dig is one of the largest urban highway relocation projects in the U.S. and reconnected neighborhoods that had been separated by the elevated artery for decades.
