The Knoxville Veterans Administration Hospital Historic District is a significant historic site in Knoxville, Iowa, recognized for its rich history and listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2012. Originally developed as a cemetery in the late 19th century, the area transitioned from the State Industrial Home for the Blind to a hospital for inebriates before becoming a temporary hospital for disabled veterans in 1920. Over the years, the facility expanded to accommodate over 1,600 patients and included various buildings and amenities. Although the hospital closed in 2009, the 345-acre site remains a point of interest for tourists and researchers, reflecting the evolution of healthcare for veterans in the United States.
