Palace of Fine and Decorative Arts

The Palace of Fine and Decorative Arts, located on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay, was originally built in 1938 as an aircraft hangar for Pan American World Airways. It was later transformed for the 1939-40 Golden Gate International Exposition, showcasing a $20 million art collection. Designed in the Art Moderne style, the building features a unique combination of hangar and exhibition hall elements, including a striking entrance and four tall concrete towers. After the exposition, it served various military purposes during World War II and has since been used for film production. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008, making it a notable destination for both tourists and researchers interested in aviation history and architectural design.
