Jefferson Market Library (former Jefferson Market Courthouse)

The Jefferson Market Courthouse, designed by Frederick Clarke Withers with Calvert Vaux's involvement and completed in 1877, originally served as a municipal courthouse and prison. Community preservation efforts saved the building from demolition in the 1960s, and it was converted into the Jefferson Market branch of the New York Public Library in 1967. The Victorian Gothic clock tower and red-brick façade are distinctive features, and the building is a designated New York City landmark.
