Second Bank of the United States

The Second Bank of the United States was built between 1819 and 1824 in Greek Revival style and was designed by architect William Strickland. It served as the nation's central bank until its federal charter expired in 1836 and played a central role in early 19th-century federal finance debates. The bank's stone façade, Doric columns, and sculpted pediment remain prominent on Independence National Historical Park. The building is listed as a National Historic Landmark for its architectural and historical significance.
