Big Dig/Blackstone Block waterfront archaeology

As part of the Central Artery/Tunnel Project (the "Big Dig") and associated downtown work, archaeologists excavated sites in the Blackstone Block near Faneuil Hall and documented 17th- and 18th-century waterfront features. Excavations recovered remnants of wooden wharf structures, cellar cuts, and thousands of artifacts that illuminate colonial-era maritime activity and urban development. The project's archaeological reports and museum exhibits present these finds as part of Boston's early commercial and waterfront history.
