Sutro Baths ruins

Adolph Sutro opened the Sutro Baths in 1896 as a massive public saltwater swimming complex with multiple pools, a glass-roofed structure, and exhibition spaces. The facility was the largest indoor swimming complex in the United States when built and was a major piece of late-19th-century coastal recreational infrastructure. The complex burned in 1966 and the remaining concrete and masonry ruins at Lands End are preserved within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
