Pier 39 sea lions

California sea lions began hauling out in large numbers at floating docks near Pier 39 shortly after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, and by the early 1990s a resident colony had established itself. The presence of the sea lions on the docks became a highly visible, longstanding wildlife attraction and is monitored by marine mammal organizations for public education and animal welfare. Visitors commonly view and photograph the animals from the boardwalk and designated observation areas at Pier 39.
