Old U.S. Mint - 'The Granite Lady'

The Old U.S. Mint, completed in 1877 at 88 5th Street and nicknamed 'The Granite Lady,' was one of the few large downtown structures to survive the 1906 earthquake and the fires that followed largely intact. It functioned as a federal mint into the 1930s and later housed other government and museum uses. Its survival and substantial granite construction make it a distinctive example of 19th-century federal architecture in San Francisco.
