Howard Smith Company Building, Townsville

The Howard Smith Company Building, located at 224 Flinders Street in Townsville, Queensland, is a heritage-listed office building constructed between 1910 and 1911. Designed by architects Charles Dalton Lynch and Walter Hunt, it served as the headquarters for the Howard Smith Company Ltd, a significant player in Australia's coastal shipping industry. The building showcases early 20th-century architectural styles and was one of the first commercial structures in Townsville to utilize concrete. It features a distinctive two-storey façade with classical elements, contributing to the streetscape of Flinders Street. The building has undergone various transformations over the years, including its conversion into shops and residential apartments, while retaining its historical significance. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992, recognized for its role in the economic development of North Queensland and its aesthetic contributions to the local community.
