Oakhurst House

Oakhurst House, a derelict country mansion located in Shining Cliff Woods near Ambergate, Derbyshire, has a rich history dating back to its reconstruction in 1848 by Francis Hurt. Originally serving as a forge house, it became home to the Johnson family, prominent industrialists who contributed to the local community, including the construction of the parish church of St. Anne. The house showcases neo-Jacobean Arts and Crafts architecture, with extensive renovations in the late 19th century. Once a retreat for the local diocese, it fell into disrepair after World War II and has faced numerous challenges, including a failed listing application and proposals for demolition. Today, it stands as a poignant reminder of the region's industrial past, attracting interest from historians and tourists alike.
