Peoples National Bank (Pella, Iowa)

Peoples National Bank, a historic building in Pella, Iowa, was completed in 1905 and is notable for its connection to local civic leader Herman Rietveld. Designed to embody Progressive Era ideals of efficiency, it originally housed two banks, newspaper offices, and various other businesses. After the banks failed, the city repurposed the building as a city hall from 1917 until 2007, reflecting the era's emphasis on consolidating government functions. The building features a design by local architect Stanley DeGoyer and includes unique Art Nouveau elements, such as a staircase crafted by local cabinet maker George Heeren. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010, highlighting its architectural and historical significance, including the distinctive dog statues at its entrance.
