The White House (1792 neoclassical executive mansion)

Designed by Irish-born architect James Hoban, construction of the White House began in 1792 and established a neoclassical architectural model for U.S. federal buildings. After British forces burned much of the executive mansion in August 1814, Hoban supervised its reconstruction and several later expansions and renovations altered the original plan. The building functions as the official residence and primary workplace of the president and is a designated National Historic Landmark.
