Lombard Street (the 'crookedest' block)

The one-block section of Lombard Street between Hyde and Leavenworth is famous for its eight hairpin turns, installed to reduce the steep hill's natural grade and make the block safer for vehicles. The switchback design and its landscaped median have made the site a widely photographed San Francisco landmark and a longstanding tourist attraction. The block dates to the early 20th century and is located in the Russian Hill neighborhood.
