Fernhurst Research Station

The Fernhurst Research Station, located in West Sussex, was a significant crop protection chemical research institute primarily operated by ICI for the fruit industry. Established in 1945 on the estate of Sir Felix Schuster, it featured a 60-acre orchard and hosted international conferences on food scarcity, attracting scientists from around the world. The site was known for its advancements in pest and disease control, earning a Queen's Award for Technological Achievement in 1990. After various ownership changes, including Zeneca and Syngenta, the research station ceased operations in 2001. Currently, redevelopment plans for housing have been approved, making it an interesting site for both tourists and researchers interested in agricultural history and environmental studies.
