George J. Gould House

The George J. Gould House was an opulent mansion located at 857 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, designed in the elegant French Beaux-Arts style by architect Horace Trumbauer and completed in 1906 for financier George Jay Gould. This grand residence replaced an earlier Neo-Gothic house and was intended to rival the nearby Isaac Stern House. Over the years, it became home to notable figures, including Harry Payne Whitney and Alice Claypoole Vanderbilt. After Vanderbilt's death, the house was inherited by her daughter, Countess Széchenyi. Although the mansion was demolished, the site now features a modern white brick building with 17 apartments, marking the transformation of this historic location.
