Seattle Underground and Pioneer Square stories

Beneath Pioneer Square are the former ground-level storefronts and passageways preserved after the 1889 Great Seattle Fire and subsequent raising of the street; these spaces are known collectively as the Seattle Underground. Guided tours operated from Pioneer Square recount historical events of the fire, early city life, and anecdotal stories of strange occurrences and alleged hauntings in the subterranean spaces. The existence of the underground passages and their history is documented; the supernatural claims are part of tour lore and are presented as anecdotal.
