Decatur House (Federal-style mansion on Lafayette Square)

Decatur House was completed in 1818 for naval hero Stephen Decatur and is an early, well-preserved example of Federal-style urban residential architecture in Washington, D.C. Situated on Lafayette Square facing the White House, the house has documented ties to 19th-century political and social life in the capital. It is preserved and interpreted as a historic house museum that presents aspects of early Washington history.
