Spirit of Detroit (Marshall Fredericks)

The Spirit of Detroit is a large bronze sculpture by Marshall Fredericks mounted on the facade of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center. It depicts a seated figure holding a gilt bronze sphere in one hand and a family group in the other, symbolizing spirituality and human relationships. The work was unveiled in 1958 and has since been used as an emblem of the city at civic events and on Detroit-branded materials.
