Peace Monument (Naval Monument)

The Peace Monument, also known as the Naval Monument, is a marble sculpture by Franklin Simmons erected on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol to commemorate naval deaths in the American Civil War. The monument features allegorical figures, including Grief and History, and was completed in 1878. It stands on the Capitol grounds near First Street SE as an example of 19th-century public statuary in Washington, D.C.
