Wanamaker Building and Wanamaker Organ

The Wanamaker Building at Market and 13th Streets was the flagship store of John Wanamaker and later became Macy's Center City; it houses the Wanamaker Organ, installed in 1911. The Wanamaker Organ is among the largest fully operational pipe organs in the world and is maintained and played for regular public concerts. The building and its organ illustrate early-20th-century department-store architecture and large-scale musical/instrumental infrastructure in an urban commercial setting.
