On November 27, 1978, former Supervisor Dan White entered San Francisco City Hall and fatally shot Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk. Both officials were killed inside City Hall; Milk was one of the first openly gay elected officials in California. The assassinations prompted widespread mourning and had a lasting impact on San Francisco politics and LGBT activism.
