Curtis Culwell Center attack (May 3, 2015)

On May 3, 2015 two armed men opened fire near the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland during an event featuring cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. Garland police officers engaged and killed both attackers at the scene. The attackers were later identified as Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi, who had been previously investigated by federal authorities. The incident drew national attention and prompted reviews of security and counterterrorism procedures.
