Clark Mills Studio

The Clark Mills Studio, located at 51 Broad Street in Charleston, South Carolina, was the first sculpture studio of renowned sculptor Clark Mills, who worked there from 1837 to 1848. This National Historic Landmark, designated in 1965, originally served as a tenement house before Mills established his residence and studio. It is notable for being the site where Mills created his first significant work, a marble bust of politician John C. Calhoun. After moving to Washington, D.C., Mills gained fame for casting the equestrian statue of Andrew Jackson, considered the first bronze statue cast in America. Today, the building houses professional offices, but its historical significance makes it an interesting stop for tourists and researchers alike.
