Bedale Leech House

The Bedale Leech House, a late Georgian structure located in Bedale, North Yorkshire, is a fascinating historical site that once served as a storage facility for medicinal leeches used in bloodletting practices. Built in the late 18th or early 19th century, this small brick building features a unique design with castellated elements and is situated by the Bedale Beck. Restored in 1985, it is now part of the Bedale Renaissance Park, where visitors can learn about its significance through informative displays. The leeches were kept in specially designed containers with a flow of fresh water, and their collection was often a task undertaken by women. The use of leeches peaked in the mid-19th century, but by the early 1900s, their medical application had declined, leading to the building's eventual disuse. Today, the Bedale Leech House stands as a grade II listed building, offering a glimpse into the unique medical practices of the past.
