Tirebolu Castle

Tirebolu Castle, located in the Giresun Province of northern Turkey, is a historic fortification that dates back to the Hellenistic or Roman Period. Originally known as 'Saint-Jean Castle,' it was extensively renovated during the Kingdom of Pontus, transforming it into a medieval-style castle. The structure is built from local rubble stone and features impressive basalt walls supported by buttresses. Visitors can access the castle via a steep staircase of 120 steps, constructed in the early 20th century. Inside, remnants of a chapel, a masjid, and Ottoman gravestones can be found, alongside the ruins of a lighthouse that once operated in 1911. Today, Tirebolu Castle is open to the public, offering a glimpse into its rich history and stunning coastal views.
