Black Lives Matter Plaza street mural

On June 5, 2020 the words "BLACK LIVES MATTER" were painted in large yellow letters on 16th Street NW outside the White House, creating what Mayor Muriel Bowser designated Black Lives Matter Plaza. The mural was applied by District of Columbia government crews at the mayor's direction. The painted lettering occupies the 1600 block of 16th Street NW between K and H Streets NW, adjacent to Lafayette Square. The site has been a focal point for demonstrations and has been repainted and maintained by the city since its creation.
