Houston Astrodome - first domed multi-purpose stadium

When it opened in 1965, the Houston Astrodome was the world's first multi-purpose, domed sports stadium and was the largest indoor stadium in the world at that time. It seated over 62,000 for football and was widely publicized as an engineering landmark in its era. The Astrodome introduced innovations such as the use of artificial turf (AstroTurf) in major professional sports.
