Administration Building, Decatur Baptist College

The Administration Building of Decatur Baptist College, built in 1893 in Decatur, Texas, was a significant historic site that showcased the early educational efforts in the region. Initially housing 149 students and eight faculty members, it played a crucial role in the college's history, which evolved from its founding in 1891 to becoming the first private junior college in the U.S. after reorganizing in 1896. The three-story limestone structure, which included a chapel and 15 rooms, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Tragically, the building was destroyed by fire on March 18, 2023, resulting in the loss of many historical artifacts housed within, including those related to the Wise County Heritage Museum.
