Detroit Cornice and Slate Company Building

The Detroit Cornice and Slate Company Building, a stunning example of Beaux-Arts architecture, is located in Downtown Detroit at 733 St. Antoine Street. Established in 1888 by Frank Hesse, the building served as the company's headquarters until 1972. It was renovated in 1974 for commercial use and has since housed various tenants, including the Metro Times newspaper. The building features a unique facade made of galvanized steel, allowing for intricate ornamentation. In 2013, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan acquired the building, planning to use it for office space while maintaining the popular Flood's Bar & Grille on the ground floor. This historic site, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, offers a glimpse into Detroit's rich industrial past and architectural heritage.
