Seattle Underground (Pioneer Square)

After the Great Seattle Fire of June 6, 1889, downtown Seattle was rebuilt and many streets were raised by up to a story during 1890–1891, leaving original ground-level storefronts and sidewalks below the new street level. The Seattle Underground is the network of these subterranean basements, vaults, and former sidewalks beneath Pioneer Square, now preserved as historic spaces. Tours operated from this location provide public access to the preserved 19th-century foundations and commercial spaces that rest on timber pilings and were buried by the street-raising and regrading projects.
