Indianapolis Traction Terminal

The Indianapolis Traction Terminal, once the largest interurban railway station in the world, operated from 1904 to 1941 and was a hub for seven interurban railroads. At its peak, it handled 500 trains and seven million passengers annually. Designed by D. H. Burnham & Company, the terminal featured a nine-story office building and a spacious train shed. After interurban services ceased, it continued as a bus station until 1968, before being demolished in 1972. Today, the Hilton Indianapolis stands on its site, with only two eagle sculptures remaining as a nod to its historical significance.
