Fort Caroline massacre and memorial

Fort Caroline National Memorial interprets the 1564–1565 French Huguenot colony and the 1565 attack by Spanish forces led by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés that resulted in the killing of many French colonists. The site preserves archaeological remains and interpretive exhibits about the brief French settlement, the Spanish assault, and early European colonial conflict in Florida. The events are documented in 16th-century Spanish and French accounts and are the basis for ongoing historical interpretation at the memorial.
