John and Elizabeth McMurn Early House

The John and Elizabeth McMurn Early House, located south of Earlham, Iowa, is a historic residence that dates back to the mid-19th century. Built as the second house on a 160-acre farm established by the Early family in 1855, it is notable for its stone construction, which was uncommon for that era in Central Iowa. The Earlys, who were active in their community and held Presbyterian services in their home, played a significant role in the Underground Railroad, with John Early being a dedicated abolitionist. The house, which remained in the family until the deaths of John and Elizabeth in the early 1870s, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993, making it a significant site for both tourists and researchers interested in Iowa's history and the abolitionist movement.
