January 6, 2021 breach of the U.S. Capitol

On January 6, 2021, a large group of individuals unlawfully entered the United States Capitol building during a joint session of Congress to certify the 2020 Electoral College results. The breach resulted in multiple deaths, numerous injuries, extensive damage to offices and the chamber, and more than a thousand subsequent arrests and criminal charges. The event led to congressional investigations, heightened security measures at the Capitol complex, and the second impeachment of President Donald J. Trump.
