Patience and Fortitude (New York Public Library lions)

The pair of marble lions flanking the entrance of the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building were sculpted by Edward Clark Potter and carved by the Piccirilli Brothers; they were installed when the building opened in 1911. During the 1930s the lions acquired the popular nicknames "Patience" and "Fortitude." The sculptures have been maintained as iconic public artworks and meeting-place landmarks at the library's Fifth Avenue facade.
