Madre de Deus Convent

The Madre de Deus Convent, located in the eastern part of Lisbon, is a historic site founded in 1509 by Queen D. Leonor. This former convent and church now houses the National Museum of the Azulejo, showcasing the rich tradition of Portuguese tile art. The church features a unique architectural design with a rectangular nave and a square main chapel. Although it suffered damage during the 1755 earthquake, it underwent restoration and was transformed into a museum in the late 20th century. Visitors can explore the beautiful azulejos and learn about the convent's significant history as a National Monument.
