Village Vanguard

The Village Vanguard opened in 1935, founded by Max Gordon, and has operated as one of New York City's longest-running jazz clubs. Located in Greenwich Village, it has hosted leading jazz figures including Bill Evans, John Coltrane, and Thelonious Monk. Numerous seminal live jazz albums were recorded at the venue, such as John Coltrane's 1961 recordings and Bill Evans' 'Sunday at the Village Vanguard'. The club is notable for its small, triangular basement room and continuing role in jazz performance and recordings.
